First-year dental hygiene students practice instrumentation throughout their first-semester preclinical course. We observed that students quickly became tired or bored of practicing the same instruments repeatedly on a single classmate for 90 minutes at a time. In an effort to engage students, we created Instrumentation Speed Dating, a station rotation activity. Student clinicians treated a series of student patients for a set time to practice an instrument in a specific area of the mouth. Interacting with multiple student patients enables student clinicians to learn from a variety of perspectives and enjoy learning instrumentation through active learning.
