Calibration sessions are important in the dental hygiene curriculum for both the faculty and students. Not only is it required for accreditation; students appreciate it when faculty are all on the "same page". Calibration exercises can range from calculus detection to radiography evaluation to assessment of professionalism in the dental hygiene program. Rubrics and evaluation assessment forms can be used to evaluate students' work and faculty can calibrate with these forms. While the calibration exercises can be very beneficial to the program, there still may be come discrepancies among faculty. The Kappa Statistic is frequently used to test interrater reliability and also to demonstrate calibration among faculty. This presentation will work through three (3) scenarios in dental hygiene education to demonstrate interrater reliability.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this session attendees will be able to:
Define calibration in dental hygiene education.
Define Kappa Statistic to show interrater reliability for calibration.
Demonstrate Kapp Statistic to demonstrate interrater reliability for calibration.
