PROBLEM STATEMENT: Considering the vast amount of research on health benefits of cannabinoids(CBD) there is a lack of research on the oral health benefits of CBD.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial effects of THC-free 300 mg Nano CBD-infused lozenges against Streptococcus mutans.
METHODS: Thirty participants who met the inclusion criteria were randomly placed into experimental or control groups and received a 15-day supply of CBD-infused lozenges or sugar-free candy, respectively. Changes in total bacterial load and S. mutans in participant's saliva were measured via the quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) test. Five pairs of saliva samples suitable for qPCR analysis were subjected to DNA extraction. A t-test analyzed the change in S. mutans between the groups.
RESULTS: There was a significant reduction in the abundance of S. mutans in the experimental group compared to the control group (p=0.0299).
CONCLUSIONS: This study found significant reduction in S. mutans with the use of a CBD lozenge. Cannabidiol can potentially reduce the abundance of salivary S. mutans, the leading cause of tooth decay.
