Evidence shows that negative thoughts, feelings, words, and attitudes of healthcare professionals can adversely affect the health outcomes of their patients. Implicit bias is an unconscious preference or aversion to certain populations. Words or actions can be manifested as microaggressions and can be perceived as offensive to some patient populations. Understanding the meaning of implicit bias and microaggressions is a vital component of positive patient interactions and can help dental hygienists connect with patients in more meaningful ways. In this interactive course, we will explore the meaning of these terms, identify our own implicit biases, discuss common microaggressions, and explore strategies to minimize implicit bias and microaggressions in the workplace.
